The project "JINGANA - omorto school project" exists since 2009. First it was just an idea, but after a visit in summer 2010 in Omorto we established the former private project as an official association. So the project was started serious. In Omorto, a small village in The Gambia (Africa), close to the border with Senegal, a nursery school and a primary school for children of 3-16 years should be built.
In Omorto and its region live about 2’000 adults and more than 150 children. The village is located in the dense jungle, far away from civilization. Many residents have never left their village before. The old school in Omorto has fallen apart and was not rebuilt because of lack of funds. The closest schools in the country are very far away. There are large sections that are impossible to deal with foot and people don’t have the money to buy cars. And there are almost no buses.
Most of the residents live as self-sufficient farmers. Without money and without education they will never have the chance to get a job in their country. So our goal is to rebuild the school, so that the children have an opportunity to get education.
Since January, we are working on the school building. At the moment, all walls are ready and the roof has to be attached. Then follows a veranda and as soon as possible the whole furniture.
